The Handmaid's Tale TV series
The Handmaid’s Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale is Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel published in 1985. The book was adapted as a television series on the streaming service Hulu, but we can now watch it on HBO GO.

It is one of the most dramatic and serious novels (for me). The plot is set in New England in the near future. It seems that after they lost a war, the country was under control by a strongly patriarchal and dictatorial government.

A handmaid is a woman from that country who is forced to “produce” children for commanders or leaders. You will see the book explain “the ceremony”, a highly ritualized sexual act where the husband is having sex with a handmaid while his wife is there to manage that ceremony.

The handmaids are restricted from freedom. Their accommodation is like a concentration camp. The government treats handmaids like an animal with only one purpose: to produce children for them.

The novel reflects the raw nature of human beings but acts like they have a noble culture (eventually are not). When I knew they were making a TV series, I couldn’t even watch a trailer (hopefully one day I can do that).

I also have some content about HBO series please check.
